Our greatest successes can often arise from the most humble and unexpected beginnings.
🧐 I’m currently on a month-long road trip, winding my way through the Midwest & Western US states. While I’m soaking up every moment of this adventure, I can’t help but share a few (hopefully) fun and interesting “Leadership Lessons from the Road” along the way. 🧐
I had planned to breeze through Minnesota on my way to North Dakota (one of the few states I’ve yet to visit), but plans changed when a friend offered to host me in Grand Rapids. Even better, she suggested a day trip to the Mississippi Headwaters. How could I refuse?!
Growing up, the Mississippi River was a constant presence in my life. I lived just an hour from its banks and often crossed it on trips to and from St. Louis. For those who haven’t experienced it firsthand – the Mississippi there is a FORCE of nature.
A river that is as much as 2 miles wide at some points, and so powerful that it floods the surrounding areas with startling regularity. In short, it’s a BIG, long river. Fun Fact: it’s even been known to guide the occasional shark as far north as Alton, IL (just north of St. Louis).
So, you can imagine my surprise when we arrived at Itasca State Park, and instead of the mighty force I’ve come to know, we found a small stream we could easily walk across (and we did!).
The transformation from this tiny creek to the powerful Mississippi offers a perfect metaphor for how we can start an initiative with humble beginnings and build momentum over time to achieve something extraordinary.
But how do we get started? Here are some tips inspired by the mighty Mississippi:
🌊 Start small, but start now: Don’t be afraid to launch your project or idea on a small scale. What matters is taking that first step!
🌊 Gather your tributaries: The Mississippi gains strength from many smaller rivers joining it. We, too, can seek out collaborations and partnerships that amplify our impact.
🌊 Maintain direction: Despite twists and turns, the river consistently flows towards its destination. Stay focused on those long-term goals!
🌊 Adapt to the landscape: The river shapes its course based on the terrain it encounters. Be flexible and willing to adjust your approach as you navigate challenges.
Every major achievement begins as a single thought or action. Your current position might seem humble, but with persistence and the right strategy, it can be the beginning of something amazing.
