My quest for quirky roadside attractions led me to the “World’s Largest Buffalo” in Jamestown, ND. While its size was perhaps less grand than I’d imagined, its presence was undeniable – a 26-ft tall, 60-ton testament to resilience, looming steadfast on top of a very windy hill.
Of course I was rewarded with a fun bison selfie, BUT I also learned a new fascinating fact about real bison that speaks volumes about effective leadership.
FUN FACT: When confronted with approaching storms, bison don’t flee. Instead, they turn to face the wind head-on. 💨 🦬
This seemingly counterintuitive behavior actually serves them quite well:
🦬 By facing the wind, they create a smaller profile and reduce wind resistance.
🦬 Their thick fur provides better insulation in this position.
🦬 They can continue to graze and move forward, even in challenging conditions.
This made me reflect on how we handle challenges in our own lives and work.
Are we embodying the bison, facing our problems directly? Or are we instinctively turning away when things get tough?
Here are some things can learn from the bison’s approach:
💪🏻 Face challenges directly: When problems arise, resist the urge to avoid or postpone. Tackle issues head-on with courage and determination.
💪🏻 Streamline your approach: Find ways to make your team more efficient in the face of adversity. What can you adjust to move more effectively through challenges?
💪🏻 Maintain forward progress: Even in difficult times, keep advancing towards your goals, no matter how incremental the steps may be.
💪🏻 Develop resilience: Help your team build the mental and emotional “thick fur” that will protect them when facing strong headwinds.
💪🏻 Foster unity: Bison form tight herds in harsh conditions. Cultivate a similar spirit of solidarity within your team.
The next time you’re confronted with a challenge, think of the bison. 🦬 Stand firm, face the wind, and keep moving forward. You might discover reserves of strength you never knew you had.
